Cotton Testing

-       Bags of cottons brought in for conditioning

-       Samples are individually taken out and placed in trays

-       Air is conditioned so that the heat and humidity are similar to the air during testing

o   Done to create consistency among sample

-       Samples are then tested when they reach the right level (temperature)

-       Technician tests and pulls them into lab

-       Samples are tested in both small amounts and large amounts

-       Machine pulls out and combs the cotton and then is cut straight across, evenly

-       Then samples are checked again

Technical Polyester

-       Polyester

o   Produced from polyethylene terephthalate (PET polymer)

o   Molecular weight of PET polymer – 20,000-40,000

o   Raw materials for preparation:

§  Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) or Terephthalic Acid (TPA)

§  Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)

-       Production

o   Two routes, each route consists of two step esterification process

§  Route 1: from Purified Terephthalic Acid (TPA)

§  Route 2: from Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT)

o   Two Steps:

§  Step 1: Transesterification or Direct esterification resulting in Prepolymer de-glycol terephthalate (DGT)

§  Step 2: DGT polymerized by polycondensation

o   Two Methods:

§  Bath Process – two separate autoclaves used: one for transesterification or esterification reaction and second for polycondensation process; production limited; cost of production is high

§  Continuous Process

o   Two Step Process

§  Advantageous

·        To keep the raw materials during polymerization in equimolar (1:1) proportion

·        Higher speed of reaction

·        Less side reactions

·        Better thermal stability of melt

·        Good color of polymer

·        Better drawability

-       Properties

o   Density (gm/cc) – 1.38

o   Moisture regain (%) – 0.4 at 65%rh

o   Breaking tenacity (gpd) – 3-10

o   Softening temperature (Celsius) – 225-230 degrees

o   Melting temperature (Celsius) – 255-265 degrees

o   Effect on Acids – good resistance to organic acids and inorganic acids at room temperature but degrades and dissolves in concentrated Sulfuric acid

Blog #8 – Research Initiatives Cotton Yarn - Two-ply commercial yarn that is m ade from large bails of raw cotton                     First Stage Yarn o    Fibers are mixed with the stems from the cotton plant, so to remove them a machine goes over the top to remove 5mm of cotton o    Sent through a duct system to a blending and cleaning machines that process 500kg of cotton per hour o    Cotton comes out evenly blended, but isn’t fully clean so it goes through another cleaning machine o    Then it goes through a carding machine that combs out the tangled fibers and lines them up in parallel rows – machines also discards any fibers that are too short to process o    The coiler then takes the rows of fiber and loosely thickens them into a first stage yarn Second and Third Stage Yarn o    They then go on to the drawing machine where it lines them out at 6 a...

Susie Kirsh: Blog #1: Special Considerations

Special Considerations Introduction My name is Susie Kirsh and I am a senior here at Judson. I am from Buffalo Grove, IL, which is about 20-30 minutes away from campus. Originally, I chose Architecture as my major because it had a strong focus on math, which I enjoy, but when I started to understand architecture more and more I realized it lacked the amount of creativity I wanted in my future career. I knew I still wanted to pursue a career in the home improvement/design category, so when I talked to some friends who majored in Interior Design, I knew that was what I wanted to do: create a space where people can interact freely or seclude themselves from the rest of the world. Personalizing a space so that people feel most comfortable or the most productive brings me joy because I know it brings the people within the space satisfaction and a sense of pride. This applies specifically to residential interior design and, while I know it is a small(er) branch of the industry, it feels ...
